FAQs
🏡 General questions about the house 🏡
Is the house wheelchair accessible?
Unfortunately the house itself is not wheelchair accessible due to the structural layout of the house.
I don’t drive, is the house far from public transport?
There is a bus stop about 3 minutes walk away from the house that connects to Sunshine train station. We can also provide a bike upon request.
What is included in the house?
It is a two-bedroom house in Sunshine West. We provide most things that a functional household would provide: a full kitchen, laundry, bathroom with shower, a studio/bedroom, living area, with bedding and linens provided. The house also has a backyard, garden and driveway.
We use one of the bedrooms as an office/storage space but if during residency time we tend to work off-site.What art materials, equipment or facilities can you provide?
There’s a large backyard (concrete and lawn) so the house is suitable for artists who prefer to spread out when they work. We have a kiln on-site if you work with ceramics, as well as a few AV equipment you can use during the residency. We encourage artists to bring their own materials for the residency. Artists should note that the house is primarily a residential house (there is no paint strainer etc.).
If your project requires more access to equipment or facilities, we recommend that you state in your application - as sometimes we can help you find what you need in Melbourne’s western suburbs.Does the residency accommodate partners, families or pets?
You are welcome to bring your collaborators or family or pet with you, given there is suitable accommodation. We will try our best to accommodate your needs and guests. If you wish to discuss this prior to applying, please feel free to get in touch.

Tier 2: $1,650
Tier 2 is our Supporter option.

Why is it not a free or more affordable program?
The short answer:
Starter Pack is the only fee-based program at Hyphenated Projects. We offer other professional opportunities that are free or with a stipend.
The long answer:
Hyphenated Projects currently operates without ongoing funding. We would like to work towards stopping the cycle of undervalued artistic work and encourage other artists to do the same by engaging in a fee structure that values artistic labour.
We understand the fee can be a barrier for some, hence we have other more accessible programs available.
For the lowest fee tier ($1,300), $1,200 goes to the artist mentors for the four 1-on-1 sessions and admin time, and the rest ($100) goes to Hyphenated Projects for developing this program. Hyphenated Projects will also be making a 5% donation towards liberation with each total payment ($65). When the lowest tier is selected, we receive $35 per participant to cover the micro residency and all administrative labour.
For this reason, we encourage artists with ongoing income to consider going for Tier 1 or 2 to support the work we do and help us work towards a more sustainable financial future. How will the artists be selected?
Once we have received your applications, mentors will make the selection dependent on relevance and capacity. We recommend each mentor to take between 1-4 participants. Each mentor will be different in their offerings and capacity. We recommend that you read the mentors’ profile and tailor your application towards the mentor you wish to work with.
Can I select more than one mentor to work with?
You can nominate to work with more than one mentor in the application form. All nominated mentors will consider your application. However, we will only allocate each participant to one mentor.
In other words, if you select more than one mentor relevant to your project/development, your chance of getting selected will increase. Mentors will make the final decision and you will be allocated to one of your chosen mentors.I am based outside of Narrm / Melbourne, can I apply?
Yes. All the sessions can be done online. For the micro residency, participants will have to cover their own travel costs if they are travelling from interstate.
Where can I find out more about the residency space?
You can find more information on Residencies page on our website.
🌱 Sprout 🌱
Who can apply?
We welcome visual artists of the Asian diaspora to apply. Two artists will be selected: one local and one interstate for 2025.
Unfortunately we are unable to accept international applications at this time. What are you looking for in the application?
Whether you are planning a retreat or a development residency, we are looking for applications that speak to the ethos of reciprocality either through a response to our location/the world, tender observation of histories, or solidarity work towards collective liberation. We prioritise caring for each other, and the space we share—we would like artists who come through our space to do the same. Conceptual rigour is cool and all, but we want to know that you share this awareness.
Do you have any tips for applying to Sprout?
Keep the writing clear and light. We want to be able to get to know you a little bit through the application.I didn’t get selected, can I work with you in other ways?
Absolutely! We tend to have gaps between all the programs we do, and we welcome projects throughout the year. Please get in touch with us.
